There are a lot of different websites for social networking. In fact ‘a lot’ is a bit of an understatement! This post is about what I feel are the top 10 websites for social networking, a little bit about them, and the pros and cons of each. Let’s have a look, shall we?!

1: Facebook

About

Facebook is the leader on the online social networking space, coming in at number 1 on the VegiBit list of top websites for social networking. The website has grown from its early beginnings at Harvard University when Mark Zuckerburg first created the service. After beginning as a website for higher education students only, Facebook has opened its doors to the world and now boasts over a billion users making it one of the biggest websites on the entire internet!

Pros

It’s easy to join! Setting up your profile is an easy process, and the uncluttered interface of the site is easy to use. The website is free and all you need is an internet connection and your computer to become a member.

Cons

Privacy has long been a concern at Facebook. Privacy: It’s really important to grasp the website’s privacy settings and set them as needed. Much has been done in recent years to improve the site’s security, but it can still be confusing. Website: http://www.facebook.com


2: Twitter

About

Twitter is an online social networking and microblogging website that gives users the ability to post and read “tweets”, which are micro updates sort to speak limited to 140 characters. Only registered users can read and post tweets while unregistered users can only read the various messages. Users of the site access the service through the website interface, SMS, or mobile app such as on the Apple iPhone. Twitter is located in San Francisco with offices in New York City, Boston, and San Antonio. Twitter is gaining ground rapidly and in my opinion is the most fun of the top 10 websites for social networking.

Pros

Every tweet you post goes to all of your followers. Facebook on the other hand uses something called Edgerank which will limit your post to only some of your fans.

Cons

With Twitter users generating over 340 million tweets a day, your tweets could be quickly buried in your followers’ feeds. Website: http://www.twitter.com

LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network boasting 225 million members in over 200 countries around the world. LinkedIn aims to connect the world’s professional workers to make them more successful.

Pros

In the competitive world of employment, it helps to have every edge you can get. Having quick access to your professional contacts can help.

Cons

4: Google Plus+

About

Rapidly gaining ground in social networking is Google. Google Plus is a social networking service owned and operated by Google. Google refers to Google+ as a social layer that integrates with all of the various Google websites. For example, Youtube.com comments are powered by Google Plus.

Pros

Great for finding Intellectual matches, common interests and a more mature audience that that of Facebook. May help with organic search engine rankings.

Cons

Super popular with the women of the world is Pinterest. Pinterest uses Pins. These pins are like bookmarks in that when you find something on the internet that you want to keep, you can pin it on Pinterest. Rapidy growing and lots of fun. Provides a unique visual element to the age old technique of social bookmarking.

Pros

Excellent layout and very good quality control for vetting questionable blogs.

Pros
